Beginning VPN

By Max VelDink

Welcome to the world of VPN!

Vikings, Pirates, Ninjas is an online RPG created by Meteor Games.  In it, you perform quests, gather goods, meet new people, and travel the world.  You can be a dense but incredibly strong viking, a greedy pirate, or a stealthy ninja.  In the following guide to each of the starting areas, you will learn how to quickly progress and find your way around.

Before we get to that, however, we must discuss the very basics.  When you first sign up, you will be taken to a character creation screen.  Pick either a pirate, viking or ninja then its gender.  Don’t worry, it’s personal preference, none are better than the other.  After that, customize the hair, face, and eyes, then choose the colors you want.  Randomize your name, find one you like, then hit next and create.

Now that you’re in the world, let’s take a look at your menus and status bars.  At the top left are four bars.  The top left of those is your health, which is self-explanatory.  Run out and it’s lights out.  Below that is your energy bar.  Quests use up energy, and it is refilled every so often in real time.  Doing quests earns you experience, as shown in the bar to the right of the health bar, and it also yields money (shown in the bar under your experience bar).  The higher level you are, the more quests you can do and the more areas you can explore.

On the upper right hand corner of your screen you will find (in order from left to right) the home button, your character, your inventory, your friends, and some help.  Help and home are self explanatory in themselves, but your character is where the broadest sub-menus come into play.  In here, you can look at your attributes, your achievements, your stats and factions.  It’s basically all of your stats.  In your inventory, you can assign items to your gallery to show off to other players or equip items to your person.

Friends can be found in towns and in the Auction House.  Simply click on the person’s character’s name, then add them.  VPN comes with a full messaging system, so chat up your buds whenever you can and make some new friends.

After going through all these menus, you then have the area specific ones.  These are found under your home-help buttons in each area.  If you click on the areas name, a brief description and all the people in that area at the time will pop up.  Quests shows all of the quests you can do there, and then map shows where else you can go.  Double click on a location to travel there if you can.  In main towns, there are shops, a bank, and an auction house.  Shops and banking work like you would think, but the auction house is completely player driven, allowing you to throw up items for other people to bid on or buyout.

One last aspect to look at is your quest system.  Quests fall into two categories, Repeatables and One-Timers (names by me :P ).  Repeatables are exactly that, and yield experience and usually an item.  One-timers usually require a lot more items and a higher level, but allow you to progress more in the main storyline, allowing you to go other places.  Each quest requires a certain level and amount of energy to complete, and some require an item(s) to complete.  Keep in mind you can fail and will have to try again.

Now that we have gone through all the basics, it’s time to start playing.  After you pick your character type, head on into the world of VPN, or use one of our guides to the starting area for either a Pirate, Ninja, or Viking below.

Pirates

pirate

As a pirate, you start out in Cutter’s Cove.  There are two shops here, The Slopbucket (food) and The Swash Buckle (armour).  There is also a bank and an auction house.  When you first start out at level one, there will only be two quests available, a repeatable and a one-timer.  “Head Into a Pirate Bar” is the one-timer, so go ahead and do that.  Once done, it will be replaced with another one-timer, but it will require you to get the item from the repeatable quest four times, so do “Swab the Deck (Repeatable)” four successful times.

Once done, do the one-timer and receive your empty bottle.  You should be level two by now.  After this, you will get another one-timer.  Do that since you already have your bottle.  The two rewards are very nice from this one, so go to your inventory and equip the hat and eat the cracker.  While we’re here, take note of the other items in your inventory.  The ducky lets you teleport back to Cutter’s Cove at any time, while the meat and water are there for healing.

Head back to the quest screen and do the quest “A Piece of Crab Cake (Repeatable)” eight times, disregarding any other quests that pop up.  Once done, do the quest “Sword for Crab Legs”, then equip your sword.  You should be on level 3.  If not, repeat “A Piece of Crab Cake (Repeatable)” until you level.  You should have no energy left right now.

When it does come back, give it about twenty minutes, do the quest “To Fort Freeson!”  Once done, you can travel to other areas.  Congrats, you’ve started your journey as a pirate!

Vikings

As a viking, you start out in Hatchet Bay.  The two shops here are Hide of the Valkyries (armour) and The Smorgasbord (food).  There is also a bank and auction house for your convenience.  Head on over to quests and do “Rabbit Hunting (Repeatable)” once.  After that’s finished with, do “A Rousing Ballad”.  Once done, do “Rabbit Hunting (Repeatable)” four more times.  You should be on level 2.

Do the quest “Dueling Gravin Frostmane” next, then head over to your inventory.  Equip the Leather Skull Cap you just got, then drink the Magic Mead.  Also, take notice of your ducky that will send you back to Hatchet Bay from anywhere and your two food items that will heal you.  Once done familiarizing yourself with these, head back to quests.

Do “Rabbit Hunting (Repeatable)” twice more, then do “Bear Hunting (Repeatable)” once.  After that, do “Slay the Rats! (Repeatable)” six times.  Take note you might run out of energy and have to wait for a few minutes for it to refill before you can move on.  If you aren’t level 3, keep doing “Slay the Rats! (Repeatable)” until you level, then do “My Axe for Ale!”  Equip your shiny new axe.

Back in quests, do “Paying the Troll”.  This will allow you to go anywhere in the viking world map provided you have enough energy to get there.  Once done, do “Get out of Town!” and you’re off!

Ninjas

As a ninja, you start off in the Forest Dojo.  There are two shops here, Ninjitsoup (food) and Worldly Possessions (armour).  There is also a bank and an auction house for your convenience.  Head over to quests and do “Make Flash Powder (Repeatable)” four times.  Then do “Ninja Vanish! (Repeatable)” once.

For this next quest, go to the food shop, Ninjitsoup, and but one tofu roll. Head back to quests and do “Masked Fox”.  You should be level 2 now.  Once done, head to your inventory and equip your headband and eat your Magic Miso.  Back in quests, do “Tea Leaves (Repeatable)” three times then “Silk Worm Farmer (Repeatable)” once.  After that, do “Ninja Wits” once and equip your sword, or piece of wood, however you want to call it.

Do “Tea Leaves (Repeatable)” three more times, then “Silk Worm Farmer (Repeatable)” once more.  If you aren’t level three by now, keep doing any of the repeatables until you level.  Note, you might need to wait for your energy to come back to go any further.  Once done, do “The Troll Bridge” and now you can go anywhere in Ninja forest map!
